In the House

Under the Weather

It can seem daunting to stay true to your environmental values when you’re feeling under the weather, as so many of us are this time of year. We have some ideas that will have you feeling better in no time and ease your worried zero waste mind.

Sore Throat

The perfect way to soothe a sore throat is with some organic elderberry syrup in a glass bottle, which can be found at any health food store near you. Keep the warm liquids going by sipping bone broth or making tea with a stainless steel looseleaf tea diffuser and cast iron tea pot. You can remove your hot soup from the microwave without the use of disposable paper towels by placing your bowl in a cute cotton soup bowl cozy.

Congestion

Store a clean stack of these super soft organic cotton flannel handkerchiefs next to your sick bed. You can add a few drops of organic wintergreen, lemongrass, eucalyptus essential oils to a diffuser, which we recommend placing next to your bed.

When you’re ready to get up and move about, you can rinse your sinuses with a ceramic Neti Pot filled with a mix of baking soda and previously-boiled water.

Medications

Depending on what’s got you feeling down, your physician may prescribe some medications or recommend something over-the-counter. Take a look at our post on medications to see what you can do to minimize your waste in that area.

Falling Asleep

There is nothing more frustrating than being completely sick but unable to sleep. A few milligrams of melatonin in a glass jar can help put you to sleep – just make sure not to take too much too often. Another great tincture is this one from Bio Naturals. It is a bit more expensive, but for those of you who really struggle to sleep, it really is a lifesaver! You can use a hot or cold organic cotton, flaxseed, and lavender eye pillow as well.

When your mind is too active, try reading an e-book on a refurbished Kindle Paperwhite E-reader, library book, or a used book from ThriftBooks. Our personal favorite is to meditate with the Headspace app, which has guided meditations, visualization exercises, and calming sleep sounds.

Staying Cozy

Warm your feet up next to an electric space heater (which anyone, whether or not they have solar panels, can power by renewable energy!) with a warm rice-filled cotton body wrap and organic wool socks.

We hope these ideas help you feel better soon!
